Background of the Kumbh Mela
The origins of Kumbh Mela lie in the Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Ocean), a story from Hindu mythology. During the churning by gods (Devas) and demons (Asuras), a pot (kumbh) of amrit (nectar of immortality) emerged. To prevent the demons from obtaining it, Lord Vishnu’s Garuda carried the kumbh to safety. During his journey, drops of nectar fell at four locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik.
This celestial event is commemorated as the Kumbh Mela, with the astrological alignments of Jupiter, the Sun, and the Moon guiding its timing. Prayagraj’s Triveni Sangam, the confluence of three sacred rivers, is the most revered site for this spiritual gathering.
